Culture of Kiribati
The culture of Kiribati is complex and diverse, with each island having its own unique ways. Many people stay true to the century old traditions and practices that define what it means to be I-Kiribati. The people of Kiribati practice their culture, this includes having community meetings under the maneaba (which is a traditional meeting house) to socialize and feast (this is known as botaki), respecting the elderly, guest hospitality, as well as knowing and cherishing the importance of family. The people of Kiribati live a simple life and plan their lives day by day, not worrying about the future. Basically they live by the motto "Tomorrow is another day." Their daily lives revolve around the rise and fall of the tide.
Traditional Kiribati dances are a unique form of art and expression. The movements of body, mainly their hands and feet, imitate that of a flying bird, which symbolizes many important traditional things in their lives. It provides navigation for fisherman who get lost at sea, it also provides information on the weather, but is also seen as a sign of peace and harmony.
